STARTUP VS CORPORATE: WHICH ONE IS BETTER FOR YOU?
There is always one question
that confuses most college graduate students is whether they should go for a
startup or join a corporate job, at the beginning of their career and which can
be the best option in the long run.
There is no perfect answer to
this question as it varies according to different viewpoints, priorities, and
aspirations of adults joining the economy.
Before opting for anything,
there is one question that we all should ask ourselves, and that question is,
" where will I see myself in the next ten years?"
In this blog, we will see a few
things that will help us in better decision-making.
Like anything else, both
Multinational Corporate (MNC) and the startup also have several pros and cons.
STARTUP VS CORPORATE JOB: PROS AND CONS
ORGANISATION STRUCTURE
Multinational companies are more organized and
have better-structured workplaces with a big group of employees, multiple
hierarchies, better salaries, and more secure job security.
On the other side, as we all
know, startups are new enterprises and take time to grow. Due to massive
competition in the market, most startups' work environment is much unorganized,
competitive, and challenging in the initial months. They usually offer an
average pay scale.
CAREER GROWTH
Well, if you are passionate
about something and want to do something big and different from others, then a
startup is the right place for you as it gives opportunities to experiment and
if your hard work and luck work on your side, then you can take your startup to
new heights.
But here we also have to keep in
mind the number of risks associated with it.
Well, on the contrary side if we
talk about the MNC, it is fully established, an adequately developed work
environment, and many more benefits.
But in a startup, you can
enhance performance and personal growth because of the availability of lots of
challenges in a better way than an MNC.
WORK CULTURE
As we know, MNCs are already
well-established, so, at most workplaces, whole work gets distributed
adequately into various segments. Therefore, they hire people for specific
roles and handle the clients and any chaos associated with that role.
While in startups, the work
situation is quite the opposite, as most startups don't have much workforce, so
it has an unequal distribution of work, and most of the time, you have to be
multitasking at the same time.
Because of this, you also have
to extend working hours to deliver the work at the right time, as you can't
afford a negative impression of you on your new clients.
LEARNING AND PRODUCTIVITY
If you are a risk-taker who
loves to make initiatives to get things done without much help from others and
have determination and patience to learn from errors, then a Startup can push
your careers to the next height.
You get to learn lots of things
while working in a startup company, as there is not much guidance. Gradually,
you adapt yourself to challenging situations and become better in
problem-solving.
It leads to more productivity
and forces you to think more creatively and encourage you to take risks to
deliver the best output.
And if we talk about MNCs, the
level of productivity is less, because of the well-defined distribution of work
among the working staff and a sufficient number of employees. Therefore, the
workload remains quite low.
If we compare the level of
creativity among the employees, then here startups overtake MNCs because in
most MNCs due to well-defined roles, employees don't get much opportunity to
experience something new, and it leads to a less enthusiastic approach.
While the level of career growth
in MNCs is pretty low compared to startups unless or until you are very
talented or working on a senior position.
JOB STABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY
Well, no one can deny the fact
the level of job security an employee gets in an MNC is comparatively higher
than the startup.
But two things you will get in
the startups more than in the MNCs are the high level of influence in decision
making and a more transparent framework regarding progress.
In most MNCs, almost all the
company's major decisions are taken by the executive or the senior-level
employees, and you won't get much say in decision-making.
Whereas, in a startup, an
employee can work with the startup or the executives' founder. And have much
influence and say in decision making.
WORKING HOURS
If you see your friend's life
who works in an MNC and you think that the working hours are very long, then I
think you may not have much idea about the working life of those people who
work in a startup.
In most startups, the work
routine at an early-stage startup is crazy and very hectic, as there are no
fixed hours.
Yes, indeed, startups offer
flexible work timings, including you, can work from your home. Still, the
workload level and quest to grow exponentially expects every employee to be
ready for work anytime, round the clock.
On the other hand, if we take
corporations, there is also a hectic schedule and workload within fixed working
hours.
CONCLUSION
It is necessary for those who
are confused between startup and corporate to do a proper self-analysis and
consider all his strengths and weaknesses before deciding which path he wants
to take.
There is no denying that salary
plays an imp[ortant role for every job person, but at the same time, it's
equally important to have better growth in the long run.
The rest of everything in your
professional career depends on your interests, abilities, hard work, and the
quality of work you perform in the organization, be it a startup or
multinational corporation as an individual.
